NBN Co lifts its copper target to more than 99 per cent of remaining FTTN premises by 2030
Detailed design work has raised the January 2025 estimate of 95 per cent. Regional areas make up more than half of the premises in scope.
More than 99 per cent of the approximately 600,000 premises left in NBN Co’s Fibre to the Node upgrade program will have access to a Fibre to the Premises upgrade by December 2030. The previous estimate, given in January 2025, was 95 per cent.
More than 7.8 million homes and businesses can now access a fibre service, according to NBN Co. Techpartner.news reports that more than half of the premises in scope are regional, and that the work is backed by up to $3 billion in government equity and more than $800 million from NBN Co.
Chief operating officer Dion Ljubanovic said fibre upgrades and the HFC network will provide multi-gigabit-capable services to 94 per cent of premises on the fixed-line network by 2030, and 99 per cent in regional areas.
In February, NBN Co said about 95,000 of these premises would be eligible by December 2026. Its August results put the number at around 90,000.
What it means
December 2030 is the end of the program. It is not the date every address becomes eligible, so premises will come online progressively through to then.
